International Budō Kaikan

founded by Jon Bluming Kaiso

Our international association provides a strong and inclusive platform for martial arts practitioners of all backgrounds. It promotes discipline, respect, and personal growth while preserving the authenticity of traditional systems like Kyokushin Budokai All-Round Fighting and Kyokushin Full Contact Karate. Beyond physical training, the association focuses on building character, supporting mental resilience, and creating a global community based on mutual respect, equality, and lifelong learning.

Kokusai (国際)

  • 国 (Koku) means “country” or “nation.”
  • 際 (Sai) means “border,” “occasion,” or “connection between.

Together, Kokusai means “international” — referring to connections or relations between different countries

Budō (武道)

  • 武 (Bu) means “martial” or “military,” but also carries the deeper idea of stopping conflict or controlling violence.
  • 道 (Dō) means “way,” “path,” or “life journey.”

So, Budō means “the martial way” — not just fighting techniques, but a lifelong path of discipline, self-improvement, respect, and inner development.

Kaikan (会館)

  • 会 (Kai) means “association,” “meeting,” or “coming together.” It reflects a group of people united by a shared purpose or interest.
  • 館 (Kan) means “hall,” “building,” or “place.”

So, Kaikan can be understood as “a meeting hall” or “a place where people come together.” In a martial arts context, it carries a deeper meaning like a space where practitioners unite not only to train physically, but also to grow together in spirit, discipline, and mutual respect.

Jon Bluming Kaiso

The Kokusai Budō Kaikan (also known as the International Budō Kaikan – IBK) came into being to encompass the fighting philosophy of our Founder (Kaiso) Jon Bluming (1933-2018). The name Jon Bluming is synonymous with the word legend. His pragmatic philosophy came from his wartime hardship under Nazi rule, and as a decorated marine in the Korean war. Unlike many other martial arts founders, Jon Bluming was a man whose understanding of real fighting was forged in the fires of actual combat. This allowed him to create a unique martial art with its roots fusing Kyokushin Full Contact Karate and Judo, to form one of the world’s first mixed martial arts system. Historically, Jon Bluming Kaiso began training in the martial arts before it became the worldwide phenomena today. His system, Kyokushin Budokai All-Round Fighting was years ahead of its time and he realised he needed to create a forward-thinking organisation that would embrace his system and philosophy. In 1980, Jon Bluming formed the Kyokushin Budō Kai (KBK) that transformed on January 9, 1996 into the International Budō Kaikan (IBK), and became its global President (Kaichō). Following the unfortunate passing of our Grandmaster, it was decided, in consultation with the Bluming family, to replace the title Kaichō (President) with Kaiso (Founder).
